6 Cool Facts about Mercedes-Benz G-Class That You Probably Didn’t Know

The G-Class is definitely one of the most iconic cars ever produced by Mercedes-Benz. Introduced in 1979, it is still the flagship SUV that the German automakers produce. The current second generation of the G-class has many mind-blowing features. However, we need to look at some of the coolest features of these iconic SUVs that even the most diehard fans might not know about.

Here are some of the coolest facts of Mercedes-Benz G-Class:

1.     An Unmatched Legacy

The first generation G-Class was launched back in 1979 as a pure offroading vehicle. It had a boxy type body exterior that was quite common at the time. This exterior body style would last four decades, and it was also inherited by the second generation of the G-Class, which was introduced this year in 2018. No other vehicle can claim to last a lifetime with the same body style except the G-Class.

2.     The Gelandewagen (Cross Country Vehicle)

Ever wondered what the “G” in the G-Class stands for? It surely isn’t just a letter that Mercedes-Benz assigns to different models in its lineup. It stands for “Gelandewagen”, which means cross country vehicle. This is why it is also commonly known as simply G-wagen, which is just a short form of the name.

3.     There’s a G-Class 6×6

Yes, there is a 6-wheeled version of the G-Class available in the market. The G-Class 6×6 was jointly made by Mercedes-Benz and AMG for the Australian army back in 2007. A few years later, they introduced the civilian versions of the SUT (Sports Utility Truck).

The G-Class 6×6 is a pretty rare vehicle, and only 100 of them have been built between the years 2013 and 2015.

4.     The G-Class Can Take You to the Moon and Back

The ruggedness of the G-Class is absolutely incredible as there seems to be no limit to its running. In 1988, a couple managed to put 528,165 miles on their G-wagen. This is more than twice the distance between the Earth and the Moon.

5.     It Is Loved By Celebrities

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is one of the most common cars owned by some of the biggest celebrities in the world. Famous people like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Megan Fox, Kanye and Kim Kardashian West all own the iconic G-Wagen.

6.     It’s the Heart-throb of the Hollywood Movies

The Mercedes-Benz also has many film credits to its name as it is absolutely loved by the Hollywood producers. It has been featured in famous movies such as Fast & Furious, The Bourne Supremacy and A Good Day to Die Hard. Recently, the G-Class made an appearance in the Jurassic World movie.
